What is Skills Day?
Each year BCLL holds Skills Days to assess each player so we can ensure all children are placed in the correct division and that teams are balanced and fair.
When are Skills Days?
Softball - February 14th (makeup-2/17) @ Diamond Development
Baseball - February 21st (makeup-2/24) @ Diamond Development
Tee Ball/Tee Ball Plus -None
What are the goals of the assessments?
- Match players to the appropriate division based on skill, experience, and safety.
- Help coaches and the Board to create balanced, competitive teams during team formation.
What happens during the assessment?
Players rotate through several stations where league volunteers and coaches observe basic skills:
| Throwing | Accuracy and arm strength when throwing to a target. |
| Catching | Fielding grounders and catching pop flies. |
| Hitting | Batting stance, swing mechanics, and ability to make contact. |
| Pitching/Catching | Optional for older players who want to be evaluated at these positions. **Softball Only |
Who needs to attend Skills Day?
- Required: ALL players in Farm/Coach-Pitch divisions through Majors (7-10 year-olds)
- Required: ALL 6 year-olds wishing to play Farm/Coach-Pitch
- Not Required: Tee Ball and Tee Ball Plus players (4-6)
After the Assessment
- Assessments are used during the team formation to form balanced teams.
- Players are notified of team placement shortly after the draft.
Helpful Tips for Parents
- Arrive early for check-in and warm-up.
- Bring a glove, helmet, and bat (if available).
- Encourage your player to relax — this is about learning, not perfection!
- Coaches understand nervousness — evaluations are supportive, not stressful.
